Artist Statement
My work incorporates functional pottery and what I believe to be the inverted priorities of American society. I use a porcelain clay body that I decorate with text and images to try to elevate the consciousness and also mock the socially inspired values of the viewer and myself.
I mainly work with themes of beauty, happiness, and wealth. I am inspired by all forms of popular culture. I also use my own insecurities for source material to bring more of myself into my art and because, unfortunately, I constantly become caught up in what I hate. I not only create these pots to help the viewer, but also to remind myself how trivial the things I value are.
I have chosen this particular medium to express myself because functional pottery (cups, bowls, etc.) is something that we handle every day. I want viewers to be exposed to my message constantly in order to counteract the bombardment they get from advertisements in magazines, on television, the radio, etc. Hopefully, my artwork will inspire thought, or in the very least, amusement in someone as they partake in a normally mundane task such as eating or drinking.
